DENVER, May 30, 2013 /Standard Newswire/ -- Former  New Mexico Republican Governor and 2012 presidential candidate Gary Johnson is joining a grassroots effort to repeal a law enacted earlier this year by the Colorado legislature and signed by Governor John Hickenlooper that places strict limits on the size of ammunition magazines.

Johnson, who garnered more votes in the 2012 presidential election than any Libertarian candidate in history, will serve as Honorary Chairman of Save Our Shotguns, a nonpartisan committee that has announced plans to circulate a referendum petition to place Colorado's HB 1224 on the ballot for a statewide vote in 2014. Johnson also noted that Our America Initiative, a national advocacy group that he founded and leads will be actively supporting the referendum.

Johnson released the results of a poll showing that 52% of Colorado voters support repeal.  The poll was commissioned by Save Our Shotguns.

The survey, conducted May 16-21, 2013, shows Colorado voters favoring repeal of HB 1224 by a margin of 52% to 44%, with 4% undecided. The statewide poll of Colorado voters had a sample size of 400 with a margin of error of 4.9% at a 95% confidence level. The study was conducted by NSON Opinion Strategy.

Announcing his support for the repeal effort, Gov. Johnson said, "Despite what some, including the Colorado legislature and Governor Hickenlooper would have us believe, the 2nd Amendment is crystal clear.  Placing an arbitrary limit on the capacity of a gun magazine is an unacceptable restriction on the rights of gun owners, manufacturers and sellers, and I am anxious to help give voters an opportunity to restore those rights.

"With a majority of Coloradans supporting repeal of HB 1224 -- before it is even on the ballot, I am confident that the wisdom of the people will ultimately overturn an action by the legislature that might be well-intentioned, but which was ill-advised.  Restricting the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens does not make anyone safer.  Rather, it simply empowers those who have no regard for the law and who wish to do us harm."
