GENEVA, Switzerland, Jan. 25, 2011 /Standard Newswire/ -- The plight of Christians in the Middle East, a general ecumenical call for churches to seek just peace in the world and planning for the Tenth Assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in 2013 will highlight the meeting of the WCC Central Committee meeting 16-22 February at the Ecumenical Center in Geneva.

The Central Committee is the highest governing body of the WCC and meets every 18 months. During its last meeting in September 2009 the committee elected the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit as the WCC general secretary and decided on the location of the next WCC Assembly.

During this session, where several Middle Eastern church leaders will be present, the committee will focus on the situation of Christians in the Middle East, an area of the world where churches face serious challenges and from where many Christians have left during the past decade.

An "Ecumenical Call to Just Peace" will be presented to the committee in advance of the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation (IEPC) being held 17-25 May in Kingston, Jamaica.

The call is a concerted effort toward inviting the worldwide Christian community to commit to the "Way of Just Peace." The call is in response to the Ninth WCC Assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2006 and the insights gained from the just concluded "Decade to Overcome Violence".

The committee will also decide the theme of the Tenth WCC Assembly which is being held in Busan, Korea in October 2013.

Plenary discussions exploring the changing ecclesial landscape within the ecumenical community and the role of women and men in church and society, particularly in the context of violence, will also be held. The theme of the Central Committee is "Building Just Peace Communities of Women and Men."

Press conferences will be held throughout the week, including press conferences with the WCC general secretary, Tveit, and the moderator of the Central Committee, the Rev. Dr Walter Altmann. The dates and times of the press conferences will be announced closer to the Central Committee meetings.

We invite media to register for accreditation in advance of the Central Committee. To register please complete the accreditation form (see download link below) and return it to Aneth Lwakatare of the WCC Communication Department via email: alw@wcc-coe.org or fax: +41.22.710.2078
