AAP Abandons Children in Favor of Adult Desires

Contact: Den Trumbull, MD, FCP, American College of Pediatricians, 352-376-1877

GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 4, 2013 /Standard Newswire/ -- The American College of Pediatricians challenges the American Academy of Pediatrics for ignoring the well-being of children in its newly released statement favoring the redefinition of marriage. In its March issue of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issues a statement, Marriage and the Child, in which it boldly states that the "well-being of children" should not be "the focal consideration in legal and public policy debates regarding same-sex marriage." Instead, the authors proclaim that the primary factor should be an adult's desire to rear children, regardless of the partnership/family configuration. In other words, regardless of negative outcomes for children, adults' alternative lifestyles should be paramount.

The AAP authors state "that even if the empirical support for [harm to children] was strong, the argument is morally insufficient for denying state recognition to other types of relationships." In conceding that evidence of harm to children exists and yet advocating for the rights of adult partnerships of any configuration, the AAP abandons science in favor of a position that lends itself to the "slippery slope" of contemporary political persuasion.

"It is shameful that this prominent pediatric group would deliberately trade the needs and well-being of children for the desires of adults," says Den Trumbull, MD President of the American College of Pediatricians. "The AAP ignores solid evidence of health risks to children in advocating for the legality and legitimacy of same-sex marriage."

The American College of Pediatricians challenges the AAP to retract this position and live up to its acclaimed mission "to attain optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults."

The American College of Pediatricians is a national medical association of licensed physicians and healthcare professionals who specialize in the care of infants, children, and adolescents. The mission of the College is to enable all children to reach their optimal physical and emotional health and well-being.
