Additional Humanitarian Aid for Afghanistan

Contact: Martin J. Wittschorek, Berlin Johanniter, +49 (0)30 26997-360, medien@juh.de

BERLIN, Mar. 12 /Standard Newswire/ -- Germany's Department of Foreign Affairs supports two Johanniter projects in Kabul and Herat by providing 267,000 Euro.

Berlin Johanniter will train 226 women and men in Herat and surrounding areas to run 113 health stations in adjacent villages. Johanniter will also provide medicine, medical equipment, and other medical items.

The funds provided by Germany's Department of Foreign Affairs will also benefit four clinics in Kabul and Herat, which have also been supported by Johanniter.

Following 23 years of political instability and internal conflicts, as well as a collapsed economy and three years of drought, Afghanistan's health system has been rendered one of the weakest in the world. Particularly rural areas face a lack of qualified medical personnel. Medical facilities are in urgent need of rebuilding and renovating. Medicine, vaccines, medical equipment, and fuel are lacking. An estimated six million are without or insufficient medical care.
