Pence Hails Judge's Decision to Block Federal Funding of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

"It is my hope that common sense and the rule of law will prevail to prevent further taxpayer funding of the destruction of human life."

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 /Standard Newswire/ -- U.S. Congressman Mike Pence, Chairman of the House Republican Conference, released the following statement today after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against the federal funding of embryonic stem cell research:

"I applaud Judge Royce Lamberth's ruling which blocks federal funding for research that destroys human embryos. It is morally wrong to create human life in order to destroy it for research and it is wrong that the tax dollars of millions of pro-life Americans have been used to fund this destructive research.

"Embryonic stem cell research has failed to provide a single treatment to a living patient.  However, science has made great breakthroughs with the ethical use of adult stem cells; therefore, it does not make sense to spend tax dollars on the morally divisive practice of destructive embryonic research.

"Judge Lamberth rightly noted that it has been the 'unambiguous intent of Congress to prohibit' such funding. The president overrode that intent last year, but it is my hope that common sense and the rule of law will prevail to prevent further taxpayer funding of the destruction of human life."
