Forbes Urges Obama to Intervene on Behalf of American Pastor Imprisoned in Iran

Contact: Dean Petrone, 202-225-6365

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6, 2013 /Standard Newswire/ -- Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) issued the following statement, urging President Obama to intervene on behalf of Pastor Saeed Abedini, an American citizen who has been imprisoned in Iran because of his Christian faith:

"It is deeply troubling to hear of Pastor Saeed Abedini's transfer as a political prisoner from Iran's Evin Prison to Rajai Shahr Prison -- a place typically reserved for perpetrators of the most violent of crimes.  Pastor Saeed is an American Citizen who was arrested in Iran while on a trip to build an orphanage for practicing Christianity in his native country.  President Obama spoke to Iranian President Rouhani in September about Pastor Saeed's release.  His life is now very likely in imminent danger, and I urge President Obama to again intervene on Pastor Abedini's behalf, so that he may be safely returned to his wife and two young children.  Time is of the essence.  It is essential that the American people know their country will defend their fundamental human rights not just at home, but around the world."
Congressman Forbes is a member of the International Religious Freedom Caucus and previously joined his colleagues in sending a bipartisan, bicameral letter to Senator Kerry urging him to secure the release of Pastor Abedini.
