Thousands of Sahrawis Call for Immediate Termination of MINURSO Mandate
Contact: K. Drawi, 240-994-2476

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 9, 2015 /Standard Newswire/ -- A crowd of around 30,000 Sahrawi held on Saturday, November 7, 2015 a peaceful demonstration in front of the MINURSO's headquarters in Laayoune (south of Morocco) asking the UN mission to leave the territory.

The event brought together elected-members, notables, dignitaries and civil society actors claiming that the UN presence on the territory has become irrelevant in light of the new development model of the southern provinces exposed by King Mohammed VI on the occasion of 40th anniversary of the Green March.

The participants, from the southern provinces, chanted slogans reaffirming their attachment to autonomy under Morocco's sovereignty, a proposal enjoying international support.

Waving the national flag and pictures of HM King Mohammed VI, the participants lauded the content of the royal speech delivered on Friday to the Nation on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Green March.
They also urged the international community to intervene immediately to lift the blockade imposed to populations in captivity in the camps of Tindouf on the Algerian territory and put an end to their sufferings.

In a statement to the press, President of Laayoune municipal council Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid told that this sit-in is a strong message to the international community to reaffirm the Moroccan identity of the Sahara and to the attachment to the autonomy initiative as a unique solution to the Western Sahara fabricated dispute.

MINURSO (Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) is the peace-keeping mission charged with ensuring a cease-fire between Morocco and the Polisario in the disputed Western Sahara. Morocco has offered a political compromise, which has the support of the US government and throughout the international community, to give the territory broad autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, which the opposition Polisario Front refuses to discuss.

On April 11, 2007 Morocco presented its historic initiative for the Western Sahara to the United Nations, "The Moroccan Autonomy Initiative for Negotiating an Autonomy Statute for the Sahara Region." This initiative came in response to repeated requests of the UN Security Council and several of its key members, including the United States, that Morocco propose a compromise solution to the longstanding Western Sahara conflict that could facilitate the opening of negotiations for a "just, durable, and peaceful" political solution.

In a Joint Statement issued on November 22, 2013 following a meeting between President Obama and King Mohammed VI, the US reiterated that Morocco's autonomy plan is "serious, realistic, and credible." The two leaders also affirmed, "their shared commitment to the improvement of the lives of the people of the Western Sahara and agreed to work together to continue to protect and promote human rights in the territory."
