A Leader by Example: King Mohammed VI in His Speech at the Moroccan Parliament

Contact: Mourad Beni-ich, 571-214-0842

VIENNA, Va., Oct. 13, 2014 /Standard Newswire/ -- On Friday October 10th, 2014 His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, presided the autumn session of the Moroccan Parliament.

The Royal speech aimed to point the political parties and all political actors towards their proper duties, which is favoring public interests over their personal gains, which is what Moroccans are expecting from their representatives and political parties. And although the Monarch had put some blame on political actors, yet he emphasized on his confidence in these political parties and institutions and their abilities to deliver more, pending that they show a great deal of work ethics and a positive approach to maintain the public interests.

His Majesty reminded the members of the Parliament that this upcoming year will be a busy and a significant one in terms of implementing many projects, more noticeably the establishment of an advanced regionalization. He pointed out that in less than a year and on the local and regional elections; he will be expecting from political actors what they have prepared in terms of projects and programs for running public affairs.

King Mohammed VI stressed that the great challenge facing Morocco today, is not only about the distribution of power between the central government and the regions and local communities, but rather the good exercise of this power, and making about service for the citizens. He stressed that the upcoming elections should not be the ultimate goal, but rather an opportunity for political competition, between programs and the elites, and by no means should it be a platform for political biddings and conflict.

His Majesty went on and said that the current legislative year will be a critical year in the political process of the country, due to the many planned projects, mainly sustaining the democratic path, which was favored by all Moroccans, and he is committed to continuing its implementation. However, the question that arises and with all urgency - King says – is whether Morocco is keeping up with this progress by all political actors and at the level of discourse and practice?

The King stressed in this regard that the political discourse requires honesty with the citizens, and objectivity in the analysis, and respect among all actors, which will ultimately make them all partners in serving the nation, and not political opponents, divided by personal interests and gains.

His Majesty highlighted in his speech, that if it is the right of any political party or any parliamentarian to think in their own political future and in gaining the confidence of voters, it should not be at the expense of major national issues and real concerns of citizens. He stressed that the exercise of political affairs should be based, in particular, on the proximity of the citizen and the constant communication with him, and compliance with laws and ethics, contrary to the actions of some representatives' actions and behaviors, which only harm them, their parties and their homeland, and the noble purpose of the political action.

This Royal speech, was a bombshell, a type of speech that showed how committed the Monarch is to serve Morocco and Moroccans by leading by example, and showing the true meaning of political and partisan work. By emphasizing on implementing, more ethics in the political parties' activities only proves that there is a true burden towards true democratic development.

King Mohammed VI proved, once again, that there is serious work to do in the upcoming general elections, and he aims to bring back Moroccans to take part in the political life by choosing their right candidates, and away from any political bargains. Morocco is bigger than any political party or any politician, and Moroccans deserve better treatment that what they have been receiving from those who are supposed to serve them.
