Morocco and Tunisia: Strengthening the Bilateral Partnership
Contact: Mourad Beni-ich, 571-214-0842

VIENNA, Va., May 31, 2014 /Standard Newswire/ -- On Friday May 30th, 20014, His Majesty King Mohamed VI began an official visit to Tunisia following the invitation of the Tunisian President Mr. Moncef Marzouki. The delegation accompanying the Moroccan Monarch is of an importance that many experts consider this official visit one that will establish a solid and sustained long-term bilateral partnership between the two North African nations. Tunisia, in its democratic transition after it witnessed the birth of the Arab Spring, is looking up to Morocco to learn from its expertise in handling economic development and political reforms, as well as its highly sophisticated manner in handling Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism.

No one can bargain on the strong bilateral relationship between Morocco and Tunisia, which goes back to 1956, the year of the first Tunisian diplomatic mission to Morocco, followed by a "Treaty of Friendship and Solidarity" signed on March 1957.

The signing of over 21 treaties between the two countries commemorated the first day of the Royal official visit to Tunisia. There is no doubt that Tunisia will benefit from the vast experience of Morocco in attracting foreign investments and economic development and the implementation of new economic and financial laws; a contribution to a new era towards a strong economic development. Moreover, Morocco can assist Tunisia in its incorporation with the international economic market, more especially with Europe, which regards Morocco as a stable model and a strong partner outside the European Union.

One other important and crucial aspect that Tunisia is looking forward to benefit from in its relationship with Morocco is the unprecedented royal wise decision to set the ground for a national reconciliation with the former political detainees and activists. The creation of the "Equity and Reconciliation Commission" by King Mohammed VI showed the determination of Morocco to cut all ties with the past and without any vendettas or retaliations. Such a commission helped Morocco to glue all the social components together, which is the right strategy to build a new democratic nation. Tunisia needs to learn from this experience to jump-start its own reconciliation with the era of pre 2011.

Tunisia can also coordinate with the highly trained Moroccan counter-terrorism experts who developed a vast experience in dismantling terror cells in Morocco. There is no doubt that terrorism is the major burden to sustain stability in North Africa with many sleeping cells in the region and with Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) still considered a major threat to stability in the region. To fight terrorism, Morocco adopted a rather wise and smart strategy based on developing the educational system by encouraging and teaching moderate Islam in schools and in all religious institutions. Tunisia is in a desperate need for an urgent implementation of such a model, and Morocco will be training many Tunisian Imams and religious scholars to help their country surpass this critical moment of its history.

This historical visit of the Moroccan Monarch will be commemorated by his speech before the members of The National Constituent Assembly. This speech will highlight the Royal vision on improving the bilateral relationship as well as other regional and international affairs of mutual interests.

All in all, the official visit of King Mohammed VI to Tunisia came at a time where the region needs now, and more than ever before, a strong alliance between all the components of North Africa, as it is the sole solution to build a strong Maghreb Arab Union and collectively become a regional power.
