NASHVILLE, June 2 /Standard Newswire/ -- Middle Tennessee mother Corinne Perry was shocked when she saw her seven-year-old daughter log into a website account that was created without parental knowledge.

Even though the website contained no harmful content for young viewers, Perry was still concerned that the possibility was there for her child to stumble across unsafe sites and even transmit personal information to Internet predators. Going beyond teaching her children and other parents about Internet safety, Perry created MyUville.com, a virtual world full of zoo characters to make curiosity, creativity and self-expression fun for kids ages 5-12.

"There are so many sites that compete for our children's attention that don't always measure up to our standards as concerned parents," says Perry, whose three children are all under the age of ten. "We built Uville to be a source of fun and interaction for children -- with the added bonus of having their parents feel good about it. Parents will know exactly what their children are doing in cyberspace when they log into Uville."

Perry explains that a parent's overall goal for safe kids-play online is to get involved and be engaged in what their children are doing online, in addition to educating them about the potential dangers of being online. The Uville creator suggests that parents follow these guidelines below to further protect their children:

Ground-Rules for Safe Children's Online Activity:

1.  Place the computer in a common area -- kitchen, den, etc. where the screen is easily visible and where you are likely to be present frequently.

2.  Computer time for children is by permission only and all sites must be approved by the parent. This goes for play-time at other children's homes as well.

3.  Children are ONLY allowed to browse and choose from the parent-approved sites that you have placed in their "favorites." No unsupervised online searching/"Googling" allowed.

4.  Never share personal information -- photos, address, phone number, etc. without parent approval.  Most sites ask for some information to register for more games and activities.  Take the opportunity to walk the child through the log-in process to make sure no inappropriate information is requested.  This is also an opportune time to learn about the site and decide if it's worthy of your "approved favorites."

5.  If there is ever anything on a website that makes the child uncomfortable, teach them to always alert the parent immediately.

Uville promotes a safe environment for children and is being created under the guidelines of Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU). Although users can set up friend lists and interact with others through a controlled, pre-set format, no free-form typing is functional onsite so no personal names or places can be shared. Uville is additionally working only with targeted, reputable children's product manufacturers or their agencies, and links to other sites from MyUville.com will be entirely controlled and only granted between partnering sites.
