Press Statement from Henrietta Fore, USAID Administrator

Anniversary of the August 7, 1998, Bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania

Contact: U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Press Office, 202-712-4320; Public Information, 202-712-4810

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 /Standard Newswire/ -- Today marks the ten-year anniversary of the bombings of the United States Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Therefore, to the families and loved ones of all the victims of this senseless tragedy, and on behalf of the United States Agency for International Development, I wish to convey our continued sympathy, thoughts and prayers.

In the decade since the embassy attacks, the United States has strengthened its ties with Kenya and Tanzania to secure a more safe and prosperous world. In addition to humanitarian assistance, USAID is managing more than $600 million in development activities in Kenya and Tanzania in FY 2008. Our efforts range from President Bush's initiatives to improve access to quality basic education and combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other infectious diseases; to advancing natural resource management; boosting economic growth; and fostering democracy and governance.

American men and women and foreign nationals alike put their lives on the line every day in an effort to further humanitarian and development programs throughout the world. They deserve our deepest gratitude. They are a model of dedication, compassion and commitment that inspires us all.
