WASHINGTON, Aug. 7, 2025 /Standard Newswire/ — On Friday, President Donald J. Trump will host Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev at the White House to sign a memorandum of understanding as the two countries move to end decades of strife and war that began in the early 90s as a consequence of the fall of the Soviet Union when both countries made declarations of independence and fought disputes over historic Armenian territory assigned to Azerbaijan under Soviet rule.
In meetings with a U.S. delegation of civil society members hosted by the U.S. non-profit Save Armenia in Armenia July 28-August 2, President Vahagn Khachaturyan said that since day one of his administration, the Trump team has been “intensively engaged daily” seeking an end to the conflict which culminated in the September 2023 ethnic cleansing of 120,000 ethnic Armenians from the disputed territory of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).
Prospect of Peace has Armenia Dreaming of Economic Growth, Stability and Prosperity
“Going to Armenia, I expected to hear about Armenia’s frustration with its neighbor to the east, Azerbaijan, and the many conditions President Aliyev continues to add to negotiations for peace. Instead, we met official after official, looking forward to a peace deal they said would come very soon,” said Dede Laugesen, executive director of Save the Persecuted Christians and a member of the delegation.
“Armenia is a Phoenix rising from the ashes with immense potential for growth in the IT sector, data storage, nuclear power, energy, mining, tourism, and as a military partner in the Caucasus region linking East Asia with European markets. The possibilities are endless.”
“Attitudes are positive. Armenia, the world’s first Christian nation, is looking to move into the future. Their first priority is peace. With peace and secure open borders, something they hope to achieve with America’s help, they say, all things are possible, and other issues will resolve in time.”
In 2020, Azerbaijan went to war with Armenia and reclaimed most of the autonomously governed Artsakh (Karabakh) region in a 44-day war. Encouraged by the Trump team, the two sides last met bilaterally in July in Abu Dhabi.
“Friday’s meeting may finally lead to a historic framework deal for peace that will undoubtedly unleash prosperity and stability in a strategically important region of the world, not just for the Republic of Armenia but its neighbors as well,” said Laugesen.
