ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 20 /Standard Newswire/ -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced that former Colorado Governor Bill Owens and former Tennessee Governor Winfield Dunn have endorsed John McCain for president.

"Whether it is the war on terror or our country's economy, John McCain is the one candidate I trust to make the tough decisions that will keep the United States safe and prosperous," said Governor Owens. "Democrats want to cut and run in Iraq and raise taxes here at home. John McCain will lead our country to victory with honor in Iraq and will keep our country's economy on track by not raising taxes and cutting wasteful government spending. For these reasons, I am 100 percent behind John McCain's campaign for president."

"John McCain has spent his life in service to our country," said former Governor Dunn. "He is committed to the conservative principles that guide our party: strong national security, limited government and lower taxes, and traditional family values. He is a proven leader and I am proud to support him for president."

John McCain thanked Governors Dunn and Owens for their support, stating, "Winfield and Bill are leaders in the conservative movement and have served the citizens of their states with honor and integrity. I look forward to working with him to address the issues that are important to the people of Colorado and Tennessee."

Governor Owens was elected in 1998, becoming Colorado's first Republican governor in 24 years. Prior to his two terms as governor, Owens served as a State Representative (1982-1988), State Senator (1988-1994) and as Colorado's State Treasurer (1994-1998).

Governor Dunn served as governor of Tennessee from 1971 to 1975. He was the first Republican to be elected governor of Tennessee in a half-century and his election was a visible sign of the growing strength and popularity of the Tennessee Republican Party. Governor Dunn has since served as chairman of both the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees and the Tennessee State Board of Regents. He has remained active in both state and national Republican Party politics.
