Conservative PAC Leader Refuses to Endorse Mark Sanford in Special Election

Contact: William J. Murray, Government Is Not God - PAC, 202-554-2358

WASHINGTON, May 7, 2013 /Standard Newswire/ -- On the eve of the special election for a vacant U.S. House seat in South Carolina the chairman of the very conservative Government Is Not God - PAC has very publicly refused to endorse the confessed adulterer who as Commander-in-Chief of South Carolina deserted his post for several days for a "hook-up" he had arranged online. Chairman William J. Murray commented, "The election of Mark Sanford would cement the view of many social conservatives that the Republican Party views social conservatives as not essential to the future of the party."

Sanford disappeared for several days in 2009 to fly to Argentina to meet Maria Belen Chapur, who he had met online, in person. He lied about his whereabouts to his office and to the public. He was completely out of contact for days without transferring power to the Lieutenant Governor. In the event of a disaster, natural or otherwise, he would not have been available to activate the National Guard or direct assets of the state. Put plainly he deserted his post as commander and now wants national office as a reward.

Former Governor Mark Sanford also recently violated a court order and entered his ex-wife's home without permission in the middle of the night using his cell phone as a flash light. He has yet to appear in Court on those charges. Sanford is running against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch -- who is only known for the fact that she is the sister of leftist comedian Stephen Colbert. While her claims of being an "independent" are dubious at best, the election of Sanford would further split the GOP and see even more social conservatives jump ship as they did in the 2012 national election.

William Murray also expressed his strong disappointment to an e-mail supporting Sanford for the House of Representatives issued by Christian conservative leader Foster Friess on Monday. Murray told Friess in an e-mail reply: "My PAC has very publicly refused to endorse this fool ... This guy may wind up in jail before the end of his term and you want people to vote for him?"

The National Republican Congressional Committee has withdrawn its support of Sanford after the incident at his ex-wife's home. Late polls show Sanford and Colbert-Busch running about even. This is a strong GOP district and should Colbert-Busch win she will serve about 18 months before she is voted out of office. On the other hand Sanford and his outrageous behavior could be with us for years if he wins. Said Murray, "If voters in this district think we need one more liar and clown in the U.S. House then they should vote for Mark Sanford, if not, they should just stay home on Tuesday."
