Flushing House CEO Douglas Kurtz Receives Outstanding Leadership In Queens Award

FLUSHING, N.Y., March 12, 2014 /Standard Newswire/ -- Rev. Douglas E. Kurtz, the President and CEO of United Adult Ministries, Flushing, New York, received the "Outstanding Leadership In Queens" Award from The Queens Federation of Churches, at their annual Gala held recently at Terrace On The Park.  United Adult Ministries (UAM) is the parent company of Flushing House.  Rev. Kurtz directs the day-to-day operations at Flushing House, a not-for-profit, Independent Living retirement community based in  Flushing, New York.

The Queens Federation of Churches (QFC) was organized in 1931 for the purpose of promoting ecumenical cooperation among the churches of the Borough of Queens.  QFC is a member of the Council of Churches of the City of New York, and works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of  New York, the New York Board of Rabbis, and the Islamic Leadership Council.

In 1999, Rev. Kurtz became President and CEO of UAM, which is an older adult ministry of the Presbytery of New York City, the Presbytery of  Long Island and the Regional Synod of New York, the Reformed Church In America.  Rev. Kurtz leads an organization which serves the needs of older adults throughout the five boroughs of New York City and Long Island.  UAM currently serves more than 2,500 clients with services from housing to personal emergency response services.  And Flushing House, which is UAM's flagship organization, is home to 300 older adults. 

Nationally Mr. Kurtz serves on the Board of Presbyterian Older Adult Ministries Network, and is Past President of the Board.  He is also the Vice Chairman of the National Institute of Senior Housing and is on the Leadership Council of the National Council of Aging.  He is a member of the Presbyterian Association of Homes and Services for the Aged.  On the state level he has served on various committees with regard to Assisted Living and Nursing Homes.  Rev. Kurtz has been President of the Northern Regional Ethics Committee, a Director of the Bergen County Coalition of Concerned Nursing Home Administrators, Health Care Planning Board of the Community Resource Council, as well as various other community and professional organizations.

Rev. Kurtz received his Bachelors Degree from Grove City College in Western Pennsylvania, his Master's from  Gordon Conwell in Massachusetts, and has taken Doctoral level courses in Non-Profit Administration from McCormick in Chicago.  He holds Nursing Home Administrator's licenses in both New Jersey and New York.
