USAID Assists Flood Recovery in Slovenia

Contact: U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Press Office: 202-712-4320; Public Information: 202-712-4810

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 /Standard Newswire/ -- The American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), are providing $50,000 to a Slovenian government flood relief fund following countrywide flooding in September. USAID funds will support the construction of a water pump station to provide safe drinking water to affected residents in Zelezniki Municipality.

Heavy rains led to widespread flooding across Slovenia, including flash floods on Sept. 17, which killed seven people, affected 43 municipalities--about one-third of the country--and caused more than $285 million in damage. According to the Slovenian government, the floods caused more than $100 million in damage to Zelezniki Municipality alone, where a seven foot wave swept away hundreds of cars, buses, and people, damaging homes, a medical clinic and a water treatment plant. On Sept. 18, Slovenia declared the floods a national disaster.

On Oct 26, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Maryruth Coleman declared a disaster due to the extent of the flood-related damages. USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as appropriate.
