NEW YORK, March 10, 2015 /Standard Newswire/ -- All Progressives Congress Vice Presidential Candidate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo is expected in the United States later this week to hold a Town-hall meeting with the Nigerian community becoming the first member of the presidential tickets of the two major Nigerian parties to engage the Nigerian Diaspora in America in such an event, Empowered Newswire reports.

According to the organizers of the Vice Presidential Town-hall event in Washington DC, named Committee of Friends of the APC Vice Presidential Candidate, it (the committee) would be hosting town hall meetings in two locations next Sunday March 15 in the Washington DC and Maryland State region. The first would be in Baltimore around 2pm, and the next at Silver Spring very close to the US capital, Washington DC.

Speaking over the weekend, Mr. Val Egbarin, Spokesperson for the Committee of Friends said US-based Nigerians are already excited about the meeting, which will bring the Nigerian Diaspora in direct contact with the APC Presidential Candidate, creating an opportunity to hear from him and ask him questions as well.

"Those of us the in US feel it is very significant that one of the major presidential tickets in the election has considered the Nigerian Diaspora serious enough to engage with us," says Egbarin, a US-based Nigerian business owner in Silver Spring.

Sources also explained that the Vice Presidential candidate would be visiting other cities in the US to interact with the Nigerian community in other ways as well.

Since the two leading parties in Nigeria, the People's Democratic Party, PDP, fielding the incumbent president of the country, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the APC, fielding General Muhammadu Buhari, alongside their running mates, were picked by their parties none of them has engaged the Nigerian Diaspora especially in the US until now that the APC Vice Presidential candidate is blazing the trail.

Leaders of the Nigerian communities in the US have however been very active in airing their views regarding the general elections, especially the presidential and some gubernatorial elections. It is also on record that US-based Nigerians play a significant role in the economy of the country back at home with annual formal financial remittances ranging above $20B annually in the last several years.
