Inside the Machine, the user's mind refracts into its component parts, and a star system reflects the user's being. Joshua must terraform a new world and develop civilization. The Technician, a formidable adversary, intervenes in Joshua's world-building for his own purposes. Joshua works to design the perfect formulas, often certain that he has created an unbreakable species, society, or system. The Technician always seeks to prove him wrong.

As Joshua manipulates the world in godlike manner, he reshapes his own identity as well, weeding out his self-destructive nature to become a productive member of society. From the creation of the universe until advanced societies emerge, he feels every moment as many times as there are organisms to experience them. To survive, Joshua must use his intellect to the fullest and draw on everything he has learned to discern the Technician's purposes and circumvent his devices.

Arthur Dunoon challenges readers to think beyond what they know about the world. A Kyrgyz pilot with whom he flew in Afghanistan asked Dunoon to assist his English pronunciation by reading Ecclesiastes 1:9 numerous times: "The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun."

Dunoon explains, "What we see today reflects what has been many times before. And when this world fades away into myth, it will be once again. It is a lamentation but also a verse of hope that reminds us that nothing is ever truly lost, the most enduring message in The Machine. Everything is the same generation after generation, styles and beliefs are cyclical, technology is no different, and the same things are repackaged over and over with slightly different approaches. The principles that govern everything never change, and understanding these principles guarantees success in everything. This book is my attempt to share those principles."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Born in Scotland, Arthur Dunoon grew up in the Pacific Northwest. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and a master's in finance. He continued his family's military tradition as a US Marine, serving in Iraq in 2005. As a civilian aviation ramp manager, he delivered mail and ammo to forward operating bases in northeastern Afghanistan. He has worked on fishing boats in the Bering Sea and oil rigs in North Dakota, has bathed in piranha-filled rivers in Guyana, and explored the jungles of Thailand and the ghettos of Colombia. "I never stop learning, exploring, questioning, and seeking answers."

Dunoon describes himself as an expert in nothing but a student of everything. "I can see the parallels that form the principles that harmoniously stitch the universe together."

He lives in the shadow of Mount Rainier in Washington state.
