U.S. Congress Commends National Marriage Week USA (Feb. 7-14)

Contact: Sheila Weber, National Marriage Week USA, 646-322-6853, sheila@nationalmarriageweekusa.org

FRONT ROYAL, Va., Feb. 8, 2012 /Standard Newswire/ -- On February 7th, U.S. Congressional members applauded National Marriage Week USA (www.nationalmarriageweekusa.org), February 7 to 14, making strong statements from the U.S. House of Representatives to encourage Americans to strengthen marriages, reduce divorce and increase healthy marriages, which curtails poverty, benefits children, and builds financial stability for our nation and for individuals.

Floor statements were led by Congressman Alan Nunnelee (R-MS) who remarked "I'm proud to participate in National Marriage Week USA because strong marriages are crucial to strong communities and it is important that government policies support marriage."

"I watched my own single mom work tirelessly on behalf of myself and my brother," said Congressman James Lankford (R-OK), "but no one says to their own child, I hope you get good grades, go to college and grow up and get divorced."

"The weaker our families are, the more government has to stand in and provide services," continued Lankford. "The stronger our families are, the less government we need. Marriage is the essence of strong families."

"Of course, some great citizens have come from single parent homes, but if you want to play the odds, the odds are better if a child comes from a home with a mother and father," said Congressman Louis Gohmert, Jr. (R-TX)

"We are in a time of crisis," said Sheila Weber, executive director of National Marriage Week USA. "A recent Pew Research Center report said that in 1960, 72% of all adults ages 18 and older were married; today just 51% are -- a record low," she continued. "A new book, 'Coming Apart,' also explains that a retreat from marriage among the working class is one key factor in the growing economic divide."

"Re-building our economy is tied to rebuilding marriages," said Sheila Weber, executive director of National Marriage Week USA. (www.nationalmarriageweekusa.org) "Taxpayers spend at least $112 billion a year for divorce and unwed childbearing," she continued. "Research shows that virtually all of the growth in child poverty in the United States since 1970 can be attributed to the nation's retreat from marriage."

National Marriage Week USA is part of an international marriage week movement in 16 countries around the world. It seeks to elevate marriage as a national benefit and mobilize a new sweeping movement of marriage education all across the country.
